Dr. Benny Porat graduated in 1999 at the Open University of Israel (B.A. cum laude). He concluded his Masters degree in 2002 at the Faculty of Humanities, Hebrew University (cum laude) and in 2009 he completed his doctorate at the Faculty of Law, Hebrew University (LL.D. summa cum laude). The subject of his dissertation was The Interpretation of the Contract in Talmudic Law, under the supervision of Prof. Hanina Ben Menahem.

After completing his doctorate, in 2010 Benny was hosted as Halbert Post-Doctoral Fellow by the University of Toronto.

In 2011 Dr. Porat was appointed as assistant professor in the Faculty of Law, Hebrew University, and as director of the Matz Institute for Jewish Law.

Benny is a graduate of Yeshivat Mercaz Harav and of Yeshivat Hesder Or Etzion.
