Message in a Box from a Far Land

What does the exhibition show?

The exhibition offers a glimpse into the urban experiment DU BIST AM ZUG – It's Your Move – created by Katya Assaf-Zakharov, a scholar from the Faculty of Law and the European Forum, together with Tim Schnetgöke, a photographer and an independent researcher. The experiment took place in Berlin and was sponsored by the Hebrew University and the outdoor advertising company Wall GmbH. In its framework, Assaf and Schnetgöke invited Berliners to submit visual or textual expressions they wish to present on a billboard in the public space. The goal of the experiment was to find out what people would choose to share with the city if given an opportunity to do so. No filtering or restrictions were applied beyond the limits of the law. The submitted expressions included global and local, general and specific content. Some of them were messages, some aesthetic representations or personal stories. The individual expressions were presented on billboards throughout Berlin during the summer of 2022.

The exhibition “Message in a Box from a Far Land” shows a selection of the submitted expressions and their presentations in urban space. It presents a unique fusion of research and real-life action at the intersection of law and society. The exhibition exposes the observers to a single snapshot of a specific space and time, and invites them to reflect on the possible outcomes of the experiment in other cities and times. Like the project itself, the exhibition calls for a re-examination of the relationship between basic values such as freedom in public space, ownership, expression and equality. It provokes thoughts about the limits of the personal, the local and the global aspects of freedom of expression within the capitalist-democratic space.
