
Prof. Dr. Anne van Aaken is Professor for Law and Economics, Legal Theory, Public International Law, and European Law at the University of Hamburg (Alexander von Humboldt Professor 2018-2023), where she also co-directs the Institute of Law and Economics.
Her interdisciplinary expertise stems from degrees in both law and economics, including a doctorate focused on Rational Choice Theory in Law.
Her research spans legal theory, public international law, behavioral law and economics, corruption, and corporate social responsibility.
Prior to her current role, Prof. van Aaken was a full professor at the University of St. Gallen and held visiting professorships, including at NYU School of Law, Columbia Law School, the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies, Geneva and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She was a Visiting Scholar at Yale Law School and UC Berkeley. She was also a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. In addition to her academic contributions, she has served as Vice President of the European Association of Law and Economics and of the European Society of International Law. She also chaired the Research Council of the European University Institute. She has consulted for several international organizations.
Prof. van Aaken is a member of editorial boards for leading journals such as the American Journal of International Law and the European Journal of International Law (till 2021). Her work continues to shape global discussions on legal theory and international law.
